Tours TUFFY Cortez,
Colorado
For
over 10 years, the name TUFFY has been synonymous with
security in Jeeps and other SUV's. If you've ever had your Jeep broken
into, you've probably looked in to or bought yourself a Tuffy security
console or glove compartment. After getting broken into one too many
times, Shawn Gregory built himself a steel lock box for his Jeep. Then
his friends wanted them for theirs, too. Shawn and Dani Gregory soon
got Tuffy started for real.
With the help of Kelly Gregory (Public
Relations Manager), Jeff Fox (Sales Manager), and Eric Fronk
(Production Manager), it didn't take long for Tuffy to become the
leader in Jeep security products. Their products have made their way
around the world and their product line has grown to include
under-hood boxes, door locks, under-seat boxes, and even speaker
boxes.

In
July of 1998, Tuffy decided that their facility in Denver,
Colorado was no longer big enough for them and they moved their
operation to the beautiful (and very rural) town of Cortez. Tuffy
is a very tight-knit group and most of them have known each other
for many years. It's also no coincidence that most of staff really
does go 4-wheeling and Cortez happens to sit in the epicenter of
western wheeling. Cortez is under two hours from great spots like
Moab, Farmington, Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and not far from Las
Cruces and Arizona.
|
Tuffy's new facility is approximately
18,500 square feet and sits on a 40 acre plot. 100% of their
production is done in-house, including the powder-coating and even the
sewing.

 After
powder-coating, the boxes are moved into the oven and baked.

 Though
life in Cortez is laid back, working the press keeps 'em busy.
 Much
of the process is automated. Here is a robotic welder.

 All
the upholstry is done in-house.
