The
Jeep® Grand Cherokee enters the
2004 model year with a new appearance, expanded model
line and unique features
as this legendary 4x4 continues to set the standard for
all other vehicles in the class it created.
“The timeless design of the Jeep Grand Cherokee
is accentuated with a new fascia and authentic Jeep character
for 2004,” said Jeff Bell, Vice President — Jeep,
DaimlerChrysler Corporation. “With these enhancements,
the Grand Cherokee is even more of an outstanding package
that offers customers versatile interior space, nimble
handling, easy maneuverability, on-road refinement and
legendary off-road capability.”
The
2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s fresh
look starts with a new front fascia, new grille and new
fog lamp appearance
for all models, which debuted in early 2003. Along with
its new appearance, the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee gives
customers even more options than before by expanding to
five models: Laredo, the new Special and Freedom Editions,
Limited and Overland.
The
new Special Edition model has the monochromatic exterior
design cues of the Limited model. Four-wheel
drive Special
Edition models also include fog lamps, Quadra Trac II® transfer
case, AM/FM/ Cassette/10-disc CD with Infinity® speakers
and a Special Edition badge.
The successful top-of-the-line Grand Cherokee Overland
model continues into 2004 with the 4.7-liter High Output
V-8 engine, a high level of standard equipment and premium
appointments, making it the most powerful and luxurious
Grand Cherokee ever.
In
keeping with the Jeep brand’s “go-anywhere,
do-anything” philosophy, the 2004 Grand Cherokee
is offered with a new factory-installed Navigation Radio
for the first time. This new system combines a 4.9-inch
full-color display, AM/FM Stereo, CD Player and navigation
system all in one unit.
TRADITION OF SAFETY INNOVATIONS
The Jeep brand has a long tradition of integrating safety
into every vehicle, and the Grand Cherokee leads the way
with several industry firsts.
For 2004, Grand Cherokee is equipped with BeltAlert™,
DaimlerChrysler’s new enhanced seat belt reminder
system. If the vehicle is driven without the driver being
properly belted, the system will periodically activate
a chime and illuminate a light in the instrument cluster
to remind the driver to buckle up. The driver should then
instruct all occupants to buckle up as well.
The
Grand Cherokee offered the world’s
first standard driver-side air bag in a sport-utility
vehicle when it
was first launched as a 1993 model. Now standard, multi-stage
driver and passenger front air bags are designed to deploy
at different levels depending on the severity of the impact.
Available ceiling-mounted side curtain air bags offer additional
head protection for both front and rear outboard occupants.
In
addition, Jeep was the first sport-utility vehicle to
offer a tire pressure monitoring system with
the 2002
model. Sensors mounted in the valve system of each tire,
including the spare, transmit information to the vehicle’s
overhead console. A warning message displayed on the overhead
console alerts the driver when the tire pressure exceeds
or falls below set thresholds.
The Grand Cherokee has a unitized body (Unibody) instead
of a separate body bolted onto a perimeter frame. This
Unibody architecture incorporates the structural strength
to make it rugged and durable at reduced weight, and features
energy-absorbing front and rear impact zones, a passenger
safety cell and high-strength steel side-impact beams in
all doors. This unitized body is the optimum level between
a strong body shell and a more impact-absorbing structure.
Safety features standard on all Jeep Grand Cherokee models
include next-generation front air bags, self-adjusting
low-tension three-point front belts and height-adjustable
shoulder belts and a LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for
CHildren) system for mounting the new generation of aftermarket
infant child seats. Also available are power-adjustable
brake and accelerator pedals that allow drivers with shorter
legs to sit more comfortably relative to the steering wheel.
AWARD-WINNING
PERFORMANCE WITH HIGH OUTPUT 4.7-LITER POWER TECH™ V-8
The
4.7-liter Power Tech™ V-8 High Output engine
has been collecting kudos non-stop since its debut. Rated
at 265 horsepower (198 kW) at 5,100 rpm, and 325 lb.-ft.
(448 N•m) of torque at 3,600 rpm, the 4.7-liter High
Output represents a 15 percent increase in horsepower and
12 percent increase in torque over the already highly acclaimed
4.7-liter Power Tech V-8 engine. Both V-8 engines are mated
to the 545RFE five-speed automatic transmission, which
provides a second overdrive gear for increased highway
fuel efficiency and quieter engine operation at highway
speeds. The High Output 4.7-liter engine is standard on
the Overland model and available on the Limited.
The
powerful 4.7-liter Power Tech V-8 engine produces 235
horsepower (175 kW) at 4800 rpm and 295
lb.-ft. or
torque (400 N•m) at 3200 rpm. The standard 4.7-liter
engine is available on Laredo and Limited models, while
the 4.0-liter PowerTech I-6 engine is standard. The 4.0-liter
I-6 is rated at 195 horsepower (145 kW) at 4600 rpm and
230 lb.-ft. or torque at 3000 rpm.
JEEP ENGINEERED FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS
Jeep
Grand Cherokee models are available in both two- and
four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive Laredo models feature
the Select-Trac® full-time transfer case with low
range. Available for 2004 on the Jeep Grand Cherokee
Laredo is the Quadra Trac I transfer case, which is a
derivative of the award-winning Quadra-Trac II® transfer
case. The Quadra-Trac I single-speed transfer case will
offer simplicity and convenience for those customers
who do not tow heavy loads. There is no need to shift
levers; Quadra Trac I will respond automatically when
there is a loss of traction.
The
Quadra-Trac II on-demand transfer case with low range
is standard on the Special Edition and
Limited models and
optional on Laredo. The Quadra-Drive® system, which
combines the Quadra-Trac II transfer case with Vari-Lok® axles,
is able to send nearly 100 percent of the developed engine
torque to just one wheel for outstanding capability both
on- and off-road. Quadra-Drive is optional on Limited and
standard on Overland.
The Quadra-Trac II transfer case incorporates a progressive,
speed-sensing torque transfer coupling. Vari-Lok axles
use progressive, hydro-mechanical speed-sensing torque
transfer coupling in both front and rear differentials.
Combine them both for an unbeatable Quadra-Drive system.
“The award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee provides
legendary Jeep capability with the best combination of
comfort and capability in the entire industry,” said
Craig Love, Vice President — Activity Vehicle Product
Team.
Jeep
Grand Cherokee is manufactured at DaimlerChrysler’s
Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit. For international
markets, left- and right-hand drive four-wheel drive versions
are produced at the Magna Steyr assembly plant in Graz,
Austria.
