The FJ-55 is a lot of truck to move around on the trails. Now start putting a heavy amount of resistance from the rocks on your front end with no power steering. You'd think maybe Popeye would be better off driving your rig! Lance Williams has the answer. Check it out.

Add Power Steering to Your FJ-55

Step 1 Raise front end, place on jack stands, remove driver side tire and shock.

Step 2 Remove the nut and washer from the pitman arm. The pitman arm should already be marked both on the shaft and the arm itself to ensure proper alignment. The mark on mine was at the very top when tires were pointed straight ahead. If it is not marked, do so now. (ensure that your steering box is at the center of its travel, i.e. tires straight ahead, and mark the shaft and pitman arm at the top) Diagram

Step 5 The mount that holds the factory steering box in place also serves as a shock tower. It is held to the frame by two bolts on the outside of the frame and three bolts on top of the frame. I found it easier to remove the bolts on the side first, then the bolts on top. Once the bolts are removed the steering box and mount can be removed from the truck as one piece.

Step 3 Remove the pitman arm from the box. (Mine did not want to come off. I used the torch to heat it up, then I let it cool down and used the puller and an impact wrench.)

Step 4 The steering column is attached to the box via a short shaft with a slip joint in the middle and a u-joint at each end, like a drive shaft. Disconnect this shaft at the steering box by loosening the bolt on the u-joint collar and sliding the shaft off of the box. Once disconnected from the steering box this shaft will hang down and slip apart at the slip joint. Don't let it! It is important to keep the u-joints of this shaft in phase.or else the shaft will bind when reassembled. If you want to separate the shaft, mark both sides of the slip joint so that it can be reassembled correctly.
